Pierce 5th Grade – On-Demand Performance Assessment Prompt

In order to help the teachers at Pierce plan the next writing unit, we need to know what you already know. So we will have you do writing pre-assessment in class and use that information to plan the things we will teach you next. We do not expect these papers to be perfect. We just want you to show us what you remember from other grades.

Think of a topic that you’ve studied or that you know a lot about. Tomorrow,( Wednesday) you will have 45 minutes to write an informational (or all-about) paper that teaches others interesting or important information and ideas about that topic. If you want to find and use information from a book or another outside source to help you with this writing, you may bring it tomorrow. You will only have 45 minutes to plan, draft, revise and edit this piece. Write in a way that shows all that you know about informational writing.

In your writing, make sure you:
  • Write an introduction
  • Elaborate with a variety of information
  • Organize your writing so that it makes sense to your reader
  • Use transition words
  • Write a conclusion

Tues. Sept. 30 A day Spanish

Read for 20-30 minutes record your reading in your homework binder. Transfer your time to the log for the month.

Write a for 5-10 minutes about the book you are reading.

Readers respond thoughtfully to their books in writing. There are several ways to take notes about the books that you are reading. When you make thoughtful, careful notes, this helps to prepare you for conversations with your teacher, parent, reading partner or friends about your books. You might want to think with a pencil as you read. Make your responses become more relevant from now on and use them to deepen your insights into the books you are reading.

  • write in the margins- make sure it is your own book
  • post it flags- to mark places you want to go back to
  • sticky notes- quick note to capture your thinking then transfer your sticky to your reader's notebook
  • Reader's notebooks can be used when you are developing an idea or or a response to an idea form the story. You can't fit all your thoughts on one sticky note , so you use a notebook. Your responses shouldn't be pages and pages, just long enough to develop your thinking in preparation for discussions or short sharing. 5-10 minutes of writing
